I am absolutely furious about the price of gas these days. I know, so is everybody (except the ones who are profiting from this). It's bad enough that we're already paying $3 a gallon, but when I read an article that basically calls us spoiled American SUV lovers I just want to whack something. And then there are just the useless articles that tell you how to get better gas mileage. Yeah, right.
Number 5 is neat- Try carpooling. Yes, that's all it takes. There are plenty of people around here who are going to the city at 5 am when Don leaves for work. Not.
Or number 6- Don't drive. I'm sure your boss will understand.
Honestly, I don't know how we can be more fuel efficient here.
I changed jobs a year ago partly so I wouldn't have to commute to the city. Now I drive 8 miles each way to work. And Don started driving my car a couple of years ago. My car gets more than 30 miles to the gallon while the SUV gets about 10 inches to the gallon, I think.
I haven't gone anywhere besides work and the grocery store and the gas station since school started. No gratuitious trips to the city for this girl.
Should I drive with the air conditioner off? Studies have shown that it will only save gas if you also keep the windows rolled up. It was 90 degrees here today and I had a four year old in the back seat, so I opted to keep the air on.
I haven't driven cross country since Thanksgiving of 2003, I think. And I'm pretty sure I haven't driven from here to Arizona this century.
What else can I do to conserve gas so that we'll be able to keep driving to work? We are lucky here. We both have jobs and we have cars. What about the people who live paycheck to paycheck who don't have a cushion? What do they do?
Oh, and on a related note there have been reports that gas thieves have been at work in our small town. They are hitting cars that sit unattended in parking lots for long periods, much like my car at school during the day. I don't have a lock on my gas cap, so I could fall victim. This would be very bad news for me because I don't have a working gas gauge.
One "feature" of the SUV I drive is that a sensor is defective and the gauge stops working. Instead, I drive 200 miles according to the odometer and then I fill up. No, I haven't gotten it fixed. It's the car company's fault and I'm not paying to have their mistake fixed.
If someone were to take some gas out of my tank, I'd have no idea until my car was sitting on the side of the road. Hopefully this would happen in town where I'd be able to get help (and walk to a gas station).
What is wrong with people???
